How to stop worrying
Hi, I'm Julie Hawkes. Welcome to The Laws of Peace, where you will learn how to understand and apply God's laws in simple ways so that you can take small steps to create big changes and miracles and become the person you were always meant to be.
The answers are in the scriptures. Let me show you how to find them. Today's episode is called How to Stop Worrying.
Let's start though by explaining what the law of supply is, because that is the law we're working on this month. Basically, the law of supply is that God is our supply, and he always supplies with everything we need and more.
The law has three parts to it. First, that God is the source of all goodness and resources. Number two, God has unlimited supply and wants to bless us with it.
And number three, the supply will mean you're ever increasing demands. As you grow your capacity to receive, so will the demand, so will the resources that you receive. They'll match whatever your demand have.
And we'll talk a little bit more about that in another episode. We worry because we don't trust. Understanding who God is and how he shows up in our lives can help us worry less and trust more.
So today, we're going to talk about three principles that can help us to find relief from the worry as we step into choosing to trust when we feel worried. The first principle is that God will provide and to remember the promises.
And we're going to start with the story of manna to the Israelites, those poor Israelites. They were so faithless. But here's the story.
So it's in Exodus, Chapter 16, verses 3 through 5. And verse 3, this is what it says.
It says, And the children of Israel said to them, Would to God that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, where we sat by the flesh pots, and we did eat bread into the full.
For ye have brought us into the fourth, into this wilderness, to kill the whole assembly with hunger. Basically, you can hear the worry, right? They're like, when we lived in Egypt, we had enough food, we didn't have to worry about it.
And yet here we are out in the wilderness, and you're going to kill us all because we're going to starve to death. So they're worried is they're not going to have enough food. Now, here's the solution that the Lord provides for them.
He says, the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. There are so many lessons in this particular story, and even in this particular phrase, I will rain down bread from heaven for you.
We can look at the story of the fishes in the loaves. There's actually two, the feeding of the 4,000 and the feeding of the 5,000. What happened to both of those stories?
The people provided just a small amount, and the Lord gave them so much more. There was extras, leftovers, after the people had been fed. We see other stories similar to this, just with the Israelites, the water from a rock, the quail from heaven.
This idea that God will provide what we need is the lesson that is trying to be taught to the Israelites, and is also simultaneously, hopefully, a lesson that we are learning at the same time. So the Lord was going to rain down bread from heaven.
And then the rule or the law or the commandment was that they would gather a certain amount every day. They weren't to gather more than they needed. And then on the sixth day, they were to gather extra because they were to rest on the Sabbath.
Now, what's really interesting, and when you think about when you've been afraid, remember, worry and scarcity is feeling like, I don't have enough money. I don't have enough time. I don't have enough love.
I'm not enough. There's something wrong with me. I'm not working hard enough, trying hard enough, being enough, right?
It's all of this, this not enoughness. And the Lord wanted to teach these people a lesson.
But because they were afraid that there wasn't going to be enough food, even though God promised that he was going to drop food down from heaven every single day, some people didn't follow the law.
They went and gathered more than what they needed because they were afraid. They're like, well, I might not have enough for tomorrow. So I'm going to gather extra.
And they gathered extra. But the extra turned to worms and the next day, it was not eatable. I want to say edible.
But yeah, that word anyway. And so it was a waste of their time. And they had to go out and get it the next day.
But one of the main lessons from this story is that every day, we need the Lord every day. We need to connect to him every day. We need sustenance from him and every day, he will provide for our needs.
And that, of course, the story of this on the sixth day, they needed to gather extra. Again, we need to have faith that it's okay to rest. Sometimes, because that's how we open ourselves up to receive more interesting, huh?
Okay, so let's go to the next one. In chapters in third Nephi chapter three, verses 13, or let me start over in third Nephi 13 verses 26 through 34. There is a set of scriptures that is so important.
It is in the New Testament. It is in the Book of Mormon and it is in the Doctrine and Covenants. And do you think that if the Lord put it in three books of scriptures, it might matter?
These are the Consider the Lillies verses. It talks about the fowls in the air and the fishes in the sea, that they don't have to worry about where they're going to get money. They don't have to worry about where they're going to get food.
God's going to take care of them. And consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin.
And yet I stand to the even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. And then in verse 30, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, even so will he clothe you.
If you're not of little faith, we're seeing the same lesson from the manna that God will provide for our needs and that we don't need to worry. Now, this doesn't mean that we just sit on our hands and go, okay, well, I don't have to do anything.
God's going to take care of me. That's a different problem. Altogether, we still need to take small actions in faith.
We'll talk about that. But what this means is we need to let go of the worry because God's plan always is to provide for us. And we can see that in D&C 104 15 through 17.
That's his plan. He's going to provide for us. One of my favorite verses of all of this, though, is in verse 27.
Which of you, by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stature? He's like, if you worry hard enough, can you grow taller? I just, I love that.
Because no, if I worry enough, it's not going to make me taller. And if I worry enough, it is not going to solve my problems. And if I worry enough, it's not going to make things better.
It's just going to make me disconnected and frustrated and upset. And that is going to be hard.
And so instead, the Lord is inviting us to remember the lilies of the field, to remember the grass, to remember the fowls in the air, that he takes care of all of those and he will take care of us, just like he took care of the Israelites with manna,
with water from a rock and with quail. Therefore, take no thought, saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink, drink, or wherewithal shall we be clothed?
For your father in heaven knoweth he have need of all these things, but seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. There is so much beauty in these verses.
In Philippians 4 verse 19, it says, But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches and glory by Christ Jesus. Are you starting to get a pattern yet? So the first principle we need to understand is that the Lord wants to provide for us.
It's his job. It's what he loves. He loves to bless us, and we need to remember the promises.
The second principle is that the Lord is a God of miracles. Remember the miracles. In Moroni chapter 7 verses 29 and 30, it says, Have miracle ceased.
Behold, I say unto you, neither have angels ceased to minister unto the children of men, for behold, they are subject to him to minister according to the word of his command, showing themselves unto them of strong faith and firm mind in every form of
godliness. Guess what? If you're worried, your mind isn't as firm as you need it to be. And everybody worries.
There doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you if you worry. The challenge comes when you marinate in that worry, and you let it spin you out or spiral you down. The challenge is that when you start getting worried, how will you respond?
And I'm hoping that you're going to remember the promises, and you're going to remember that God is a god of miracles, because as you step into that energy, it's going to create relief and peace. And that's what we need more than anything.
There are so many stories of miracles in the scriptures. One of my favorite is Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Right?
The Lord didn't take away their problem. He didn't keep them from being thrown in the fiery furnace. They still had to face the trial, but the Savior was right there with them.
Nephi and the plates. It was miraculous that they were able to get the plates and the way they got them was miraculous. Daniel and the lion's den, Lamoni's father, right?
And his change of heart. How about Ammon the arm chopper and chopping off everybody's arms to save to save the king's sheep? There are so many fantastic stories in the scriptures of miracles that the Lord provided for people.
I want to take a really quick second and I want to tell you about a very, very current miracle that just happened to me last week.
Many of you know that three months ago, my Facebook got hacked and subsequently, my Apple Pay, my Venmo, a whole bunch of things got hacked, and it was very traumatic for me.
And to this day, I don't have a page, a Facebook page that works because of the fallout from this fraudulent activity. Well, my Venmo got shut down back in November because of all the stuff that went wrong. I won't bore you with the details.
And there were some challenges, and we thought we had them all fixed and solved. Well, last week, I got a message from Venmo saying they were shutting down my account and that I owed them $1,000 that the hackers had actually taken.
And I had thought we had resolved it and fixed it, but we hadn't. And I was so distraught because Venmo is a lot like Facebook in that you cannot call and talk to a person. You just have to work through message and you have to work through email.
And that can be very frustrating for somebody who's not technologically adept like me. I'm very challenged in that direction. Plus, I want to talk to a person.
I'm old. And so I was very distraught. And the more I looked into it, the more it looked like I was going to need to come up with $1,000.
Now, coming up with $1,000 isn't that big of a deal, except for that it felt wrong because it was the money the hackers took. It wasn't something that I owed. And so I said a prayer and I asked the Lord for a miracle.
I said, Heavenly Father, I need a miracle here. I need this Venmo fixed. This is how I run my business is through Venmo.
And I can't just quit on it. And I need this taken care of. And so I need a miracle.
And then I called a couple of my really close friends, and I said, Will you pray for me today? We need a miracle. And that was about 7 o'clock in the morning.
And then I called my bank and I said, there's this issue. I think this is a puzzle. We need to figure out the pieces.
There's a lot about this. I don't understand. Will you help me figure this out?
And they did. And it turns out, like I said, I won't bore you with the details. It turns out that the bank paid the Venmo, and it was a simple fix, and it was done within a matter of hours.
And I got my miracle in less than 24 hours. God is so good, and he wants to provide us with the miracles, and he will provide us with the miracles. What is required is our faith.
And the way that we get the faith to create the miracle is we remember the past miracles.
Remember the past miracles in your life, the times when things worked out when they shouldn't have, the times when you had support, when it felt like there was nobody there, the times that things just came together. Those were all miracles.
Those were all tender mercies. And if you struggle to remember the own miracles in your own life, then look to the scriptures and the myriad of miracles in the scriptures.
One of the things I love most about the Book of Mormon is that one of the premises of the book or one of the main messages we get from the book is that God likes to do impossible things.
He likes to make the impossible happen and that because of Jesus Christ, those things can happen. And so I invite you to remember the miracles. That's the second principle.
The third principle is to act in faith and take small steps forward. Taking action eliminates fear and it creates motivation. Taking action is also powerful because when we're obedient to a commandment, then it creates more faith.
If anybody has ever had the challenge of knowing they needed to pay their tithing and being prompted to do so, but recognizing they didn't have the money to do it and just taking this massive leap of faith and paying it anyway, even though it didn't
make any sense and financially it was a disaster, then those people know that miracles happen and just taking that step forward and writing that check or paying that money is the action that creates more faith. And then when you start seeing the
miracles like, well, of course, I'm going to do that, right? Because now you've had an experience where you've seen the Lord's hand in your life and it's easier for you to take the next step. And so this is a powerful and important step.
Even in my miracle for the Venmo miracle. I didn't just say, okay, Heavenly Father, give me a miracle and do nothing. I immediately reached out to my friends.
I immediately reached out to the bank. I immediately started emailing Venmo. I immediately started working the problem in my head.
I still took action. I just knew that I needed the Lord to step in and fix something I could not fix by myself. So action is required.
And as we take the action, it creates peace for us and it creates faith for us. And it helps eliminate the worry.
Anytime you're really, really worried, take a small action step forward and it will help relieve some of that anxiety and some of that worry. I just want to finish with one last scripture and one quick story and Exodus 17 verse 6.
It says, Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the Rock of Horeb, and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
It's this idea that in the desert, when there is no water, Moses poked a rock and water came out. A quick story. I won't give you all the details, but I have a dear friend that had made some arrangements to purchase a house.
And the house became challenging. It was some really good friends. They were in a deal that they were gonna stay in the house for a little while, and then they were going to do the loan, and it was all gonna work out.
However, after they had been there for a short amount of time, the people they had made the deal with reneged on their deal. And they said, you need to find a way to finance this house immediately, or you need to move out.
And they knew that that house was the right house for them, but they weren't sure how they were going to manage the finances. And so they prayed for a miracle.
And until the very last minute, it did not look like a miracle was going to come through, but it did. And this friend always likes to say, Julie, just like Moses, he pulled water out of a rock. God will do miracles for us.
And he's right. God will do miracles for us. And just like my friend and how he was able to get his house and all worked out, it was this beautiful miracle.
And it was a beautiful home. It had a swimming pool, and it was big, and it had lots of windows and this ginormous, beautiful kitchen. It was everything they could have ever hoped for.
The Lord provided for that. And he did it in a way that let them know that God does visit us in our afflictions, like it says in Mosiah chapter 24.
And he does help us in ways that feel impossible, just like water from the rock, just like manna from heaven, just like consider the lilies. And so I invite you today to remember these three principles. First of all, that God wants to provide.
And so remember the promises. And secondly, that God is a god of miracles. Remember the miracles.
And third, that we need to take small action steps to create those miracles and to create that peace and relief so that we can find relief from the pressure of the worry. Thank you so much for being here. Will you do me a favor?
Will you share this podcast with someone you know is worried and needs to hear it? Thank you so much for being here. I hope you have a wonderful day.
